Build Your Own Wind Generator

With energy prices soaring as fossil fuels on our planet are diminishing, alternative fuels must be sought. Many energy resources come naturally, and wind power is one of them. You have the ability to build your own wind turbine to produce your own electricity.

Wind power has the potential of saving you hundreds if not thousands of dollars on your electric bill. This is not new information; wind power has been used to some degree for hundreds of years. From wind driven ships with massive sails to quaint little windmills for grinding grain, wind power was and is a viable option.

Wind turbines are decedents of the windmill; today the wind turbine is used commercially to power entire towns and personally to power individual homes. Charles Bruch invented the first such turbine in 1888 at his home in Cleveland Ohio. He innovatively used a picket fence for the rotor. In his time the technology was not adequate to hook up to the local power grid, but today it is.

The initial phase of creating your own turbine or wind farm to power your home can be time intensive; nevertheless, the gains are more than worth it. The first thing to do is find an area with adequate wind speeds, you must be able to access winds of at least 17 mph. Anything less will greatly decrease your power.

High energy costs have been dramatically lowered with the use of wind farms globally. The UK alone has over 150 wind farms powering their population. California, Texas, Massachusetts, and other states are already using this energy or plans are being implemented to build farms to produce electricity from the wind.

Turbines such as those used in large-scale applications, as huge commercial buildings, must be manufactured. However, a smaller turbine (700-1000 watts) is simpler and lend to the possibility of building your own wind generator. Keep in mind that to harness more wind will require a larger rotor. Too little wind speed will prevent you from generating much electricity so again beware of your location.

Once you have completed these basic steps and you are ready to produce your own green energy, you will find that you can have a sense of freedom and great accomplishment. Seeing the movement of rotors as you feel the breeze upon your cheek is symbolic of the small carbon footprint that you will be generating.

We have been lulled into thinking that energy independence is too complicated. The truth is harnessing this natural energy source is not that difficult, you can power your home with green electricity and may even produce enough to sell back to your power company. When is the last time they sent you a check? If all this is not enough of a reason to take another look at wind power then consider the health and environmental problems we will be solving.
